Our client administers the reproduction rights of published works on behalf of Canadian creators and publishers. They issue licenses, collect royalties, and distribute royalties to copyright holders. They are growing their Toronto team, with the addition of the Manager, Legal Services and Government Relations.

Reporting to the Director, Legal Services and External Affairs, you will be responsible for providing a wide range of in-house legal services, managing all aspects of government relations, and managing major license negotiation teams.

Your responsibilities will include:
Supervising all compliance files and resources
Supervising in-house legal counsel
Managing relationship with board legal counsel including regular meetings, review of board actions and other activities.
Directing and supervising all external legal affairs
Providing direction to senior management and staff on licensing and legislative matters.
Development and drafting of licences and other legal documents.
Liaising with legal affairs executives in other organizations.
Public speaking engagements
Provide advice on general legal matters involving employment issues and other matters as may arise in the day to day operations of the business.
Managing annual corporate filings
Monitoring government activities and undertaking policy research/analysis
Supervision of all matters involving the Copyright Board of Canada
Assist the Director, Legal Services and External Affairs and the Executive Director in preparing submissions and position papers
Developing and maintaining strategic profiles of each organization
Managing strategic licensing programs for each organization
Supervising and preparing licensing teams in a timely manner for renewal negotiations of these major licences
Work with the Executive Director and the Director of Business Development on the development of new digital programs for these sectors

Exigences:

You are the ideal candidate if you:
-have an LL.B/JD
-have approximately 4-8 years of related experience
-have Copyright/IP law or publishing or related industries experience
-have a good knowledge of copyright legal decisions, Copyright act and related issues
-have good relationship building, influencing and planning skills
-have strong organizational, interpersonal, and time-management skills
-excellent communication, presentation and negotiation skills
-are a team player with the ability to work cooperatively with all levels of management, as well as independently
