Our client, a new addition to Canada’s auto finance market, is looking for a Senior Counsel to join their Toronto team and oversee the Canadian legal work.

Reporting directly to Senior Management, the Senior Counsel will be responsible for legal matters involved with the company’s entrance into the Canadian auto finance market.

The role will include:

-Providing direction and advice to management on all aspects of business operations including litigation, business, corporate, insurance, dealers and antitrust; as well as ensuring compliance with federal and provincial rules and regulations.

-Negotiating, drafting, reviewing and executing business agreements, vendor contracts, and other legal agreements.

- Overseeing the development and implementation of applicable customer-facing and dealer-facing documentation in compliance with applicable laws

-Coordinating the effort to obtain and maintain required consumer lending and leasing and motor vehicle dealer licenses.

-Communicating legal information to impacted stakeholders, including communication of legal and regulatory changes and findings, developments impacting business processes, and analysis of process changes.

-Responsibility for selection and management of external counsel.


You are the ideal candidate if you have:

• Have an LL.B/ JD, and 8+ years of relevant specialized legal experience within the financial services industry.
• Have experience handling all legal aspects of financial services business; both law firm and in-house background with automobile finance preferred
• Strong legal/financial/business acumen and ability to work effectively and multitask successfully in fast-paced and complex business environment
• Strong knowledge of federal and provincial statutes and general legal principles associated with corporate transactions, consumer lending laws, credit bureau reporting, privacy, employment and corporate governance.
• Effective management and advocacy skills
• Excellent communication skills: ability to interface with team members, outside legal counsel and business groups at all levels of the organization
• Strong problem solver; excellent project management skills; attention to detail
