Our client, a leading insurance company is expanding their legal team. They are looking to add an Assistant Vice President, Legal Counsel & Compliance Officer to their Toronto Team.

Reporting to the General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer you will provide corporate legal advice in relation to insurance, IT, and real estate matters as well as ensuring and reporting on the company’s compliance with applicable legal, regulatory and internal requirements.

The role will include:
• Providing sound and practical legal advice
• Reviewing and drafting a broad range of agreements, insurance policies, internal policies, procedures and guidelines and advising on corporate litigation.
• Liaising with internal clients to ensure that legal and compliance risk is identified and appropriate action taken.
• Liaising with the risk management group cooperatively to address legal and compliance risk.
• Understanding and staying up-to-date on applicable statutory requirements and case law, and disseminating internally as required.
• Understanding and staying up-to-date on federal, provincial and internal compliance requirements, including legislative and regulatory mandates, as well as the company’s compliant responses
• Providing recommendations for additional necessary responses including drafting and maintaining any required policies and procedures.
• Monitoring and coordinating the compliance activities of other departments as needed.
• Ensuring OSFI, provincial regulator and internal reporting requirements are met, together with the Corporate and Legal group
•Overseeing the day-to-day management of the company’s Regulatory Compliance Management systems together with the Corporate and Legal group
• Keeping the General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer informed on the operation and progress of all legal and compliance work and initiatives.


You are the ideal candidate if you:
•Have an LL.B/JD and are a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
•Have a minimum of 3 years legal experience with an emphasis on regulatory, insurance/reinsurance, corporate, IT transactional, and leasing and real estate knowledge
•Have knowledge of and experience with relevant legislation and regulation
•Have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to apply them practically.
•Have strong interpersonal, teamwork and networking skills, with a willingness to cooperate and share knowledge
•Are motivated and highly organized with strong communication and time management skills.
•Are able to work independently and function well under pressure.
