Description:  
Our client, a leading insurance company is expanding their legal team. They are looking to add a Claims Counsel to their Toronto Team.

Reporting to the Vice-President, Claims, the Counsel will be responsible for handling, evaluating, reserving and resolving multi-line claims with a primary focus on Liability claims, including Directors & Officers and Errors & Omissions claims.  Using his/her legal education and joint legal and claims experience, the Claims Counsel will deliver senior level technical handling services and will also serve as a guide and mentor to other members of the claims team. He/she will also assist underwriters with some designated underwriting-related legal advice.

Responsibilities:

• Coverage assessments including promptly identifying, addressing and resolving coverage matters.          
• Proactively investigate, assess, manage and resolve claims.
• Proactively retain, instruct and direct counsel and other external claim service providers.
• Promptly assess, post and maintain all reserves on a Probable Ultimate Cost basis.
• Promptly issue payments in accordance with the client’s payment assessment and authorization protocols.
• Manage and archive all claim file documentation in an appropriate and orderly manner.
• Promptly archive details of all material claim handling activity.
• Schedule and attend mediations, appraisals and other ADR events in Canada and the USA.
• Proactively manage claim file abeyance process.
• Present claims before "committee" for evaluation/authority including completion of pertinent claim summary reports and notice of high exposure claims to senior management.
• Initiate and participate in inter-departmental and external communications as required including the client’s underwriting, MGA and accounting departments, IT staff and reinsurers.
• Conduct and report on claim audits involving MGAs and other entities.
• Participate in the claims department peer review audit process.
• Assist with identifying and implementing initiatives to enhance claim handling efficiencies and effectiveness.
• Provide technical mentoring to other claims team members on liability losses.
• Engage with underwriters to provide designated underwriting-related legal advice, including drafting underwriting-related confidentiality agreements and considering policy language intent.

Exigences:

You are the ideal candidate if you have:
• a solid claims background and demonstrate a natural desire to provide exceptional client service through your energy, enthusiasm and initiative.
• A aw degree with a license to practice law in one of the Provinces of Canada. 
• CIP, FCIP or CRM designations an asset. 
• Minimum 7 to 10 years multi-line claims experience, with an emphasis on liability.
• Strong technical skills, specifically involving casualty and property claims and claim-related litigation.
• Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
• Motivated and highly organized with strong communication, interpersonal and time management skills.
• Exceptional computer skills including Microsoft Office.
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment and to function well under pressure.
• Fluency in English is mandatory. Fluency in French (oral and written) is an asset.
