Our client, a leader in the creation and manufacturing of hot runner technology, systems and components for the plastics industry is looking to expand their team. They are looking for a Director, Intellectual Property.
Reporting to the president, the Director of IP will be providing departmental leadership, setting objectives and assuming all responsibility for coordinating patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, and confidentiality activities relating to the clients products, processes and services.
The role involves:
Providing and implementing a global patent filing and patent maintenance strategy and policy; strategic planning and supervising/approval of the drafting process of new patent applications to cover products/processes and/or to block the competition.
Supervising the prosecution of clients global pending applications, including participation at interviews at various patent offices
watching competitors patents and other IP rights and make sure that clients products do not infringe the legal rights of a third party
enforcing clients inventorship and patent rewarding policies
supervising the enforcement of patent and IP rights, supervising outside IP counsel, coordinating and overseeing legal actions and associated staff and/or outside law firms.
Planning and administering budget
Supervising assigned staff and managing other duties regarding intellectual property operations.
Participating at clients R&D and product development meetings
Coordinating clients Competitive Intelligence activities based on patent and technical searches.
Investigating technological and patent opportunities that belong to Universities and Research establishments.
Developing and organizing databases of information on existing patents and intellectual property, competitors and potential competitors.
Working with lawyers to file, maintain and research patents and protect intellectual property.
Brainstorming with R&D on ideas for patenting
Training R&D staff on understanding the know-how disclosed in patents
Advising senior management of litigation strategies.
Developing training programs relating to patents for internal staff
Requirements:
You are the ideal candidate if you:
are an IP Lawyer +/or Patent Agent
have an Engineering Degree (preferable mechanical)
have at least five years experience in mechanical design Intellectual Property related activities
have five years experience with the US, EP, PCT, Canadian and Japanese patent prosecution laws
have two years experience with the US patent litigation, reissue and reexamination cases and EP patent opposition process
can communicate with technical and legal professionals and prepare technical reports
are able to understand and present orally and in writing the essence of an invention
have a great attention to detail
are able to work fast while avoiding mistakes and are a multi-tasker
are entrepreneurial and take initiative
Understand technical, business and market trends from the technical and the patent literature
Keep current with patent laws and can understand and apply any changes
experience in Injection Molding Industry and Hot runners would be an asset
