Overview

Our Ottawa based client is looking to add a bilingual Legal Counsel to their team for a 1-year fixed-term opportunity. Reporting to the Director of Legal, Senior Legal Counsel will be responsible for providing legal services to the organization on a wide range of business issues.


Responsibilities

· Reviewing, negotiating, drafting and advising management on a wide range of contracting issues, including procurement, leases, and government funding arrangements.

· Providing advice on various matters including rights and obligations under the organizations’ contracts and funding agreements.

· Delivering proactive, responsible legal support to relevant business areas to mitigate legal risks for the organization

· Participating in and leading negotiations with external parties

· Provide pension law advice related to the administration of the employee pension plan

· Drafting and reviewing relevant correspondence, memoranda and other legal documents

· Providing advice and solutions to improve corporate initiatives, policies, procedures and governance

· Participating in litigation matters, including drafting pleadings and other legal submissions

· Provide guidance and coaching to junior counsel.

Requirements

· JD/LL.B and are a member in good standing with a Bar of a province or territory in Canada

· A minimum of 2 to 5 years of relevant legal experience gained either in-house, at a law firm or government entity;

· Familiarity with providing legal services and advice in the following areas relevant to our client’s mandate including: Federal privacy and access to information, Commercial law, Contract law and procurement law, Corporate law and governance, and Administrative Law.

· Experience drafting and reviewing RFPs and bidding/tendering documents

· Impeccable writing and communication skills

· Experience in the interpretation of complex statutory/regulatory provisions.

· Experience conducting legal research and writing

· Ability to deliver presentations and present issues/positions, as well as translate material to suit the particular audience

· Strong judgment and decision-making qualities, and collaborative in soliciting the input of others

· Ability to self-motivate, work well independently as well as part of a team

· Strong client service orientation

· Bilingual in French and English (BBBB)

· Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
