Senior Litigation Associate Lawyer - Insurance Coverage & Monitoring

Our client, a leading global law firm is seeking a senior associate lawyer to join its thriving Canadian insurance coverage and monitoring practice.
 
This is a unique opportunity to join the Vancouver or Calgary office of a global law firm with a strong international insurance platform and a highly regarded Canadian practice. 
 
The successful candidate will have strong experience in insurance coverage analysis and monitoring, with the ability to advise insurer clients across a broad range of policy areas, including CGL, wrap-up liability, professional indemnity, cyber, product liability and recall, D&O, crime, and other commercial insurance policies.

The role may also include opportunities to appear before the courts on coverage-related matters, depending on the candidate's interest and experience.
 
Key Responsibilities:
 
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
  • Reviewing and analyzing coverage under a variety of insurance policies and providing strategic advice to insurer clients.
  • Conducting coverage investigations and managing coverage disputes.
  • Representing London and North American-based insurer clients in the management of Canadian coverage matters.
  • Acting as monitoring counsel in matters where defence counsel has been retained but coverage remains a critical issue.
  • Recommending and appointing defence counsel on behalf of insurer clients, where appropriate.
  • Coordinating and managing information received from defence counsel and clients.
  • Maintaining and developing strong relationships with insurer clients.
  • Participating in mediations as an insurer representative.
  • Conducting legal research and preparing legal analysis.
  • Participating in professional and business development opportunities, including relevant Canadian Bar Association and industry events.
  • Supporting other related business needs and practice priorities as they arise.
Qualifications:
 
The ideal candidate will have:
  • A JD or LL.B.  from a recognized common law school and be qualified to practise law in British Columbia, Alberta, or Manitoba.
  • Membership in good standing with the applicable provincial law society.
  • Approximately 5 to 7 years of post-call experience in private practice with specific experience in insurance coverage analysis.
  • Experience advising on general insurance and/or professional indemnity matters.
  • Excellent legal writing, communication, and analytical skills.
  • Sound judgment, strong legal reasoning, and a practical, solutions-oriented approach.
  • The ability to develop strategy, present clear advice to clients, and communicate instructions precisely.
  • Strong advocacy skills.
  • High integrity, intellectual rigour, and professionalism.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusted client relationships.
  • An entrepreneurial mindset and interest in practice and client development.
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
Compensation:
 
The expected salary range for this position is approximately $170,000 to $185,000, depending on experience level and overall qualifications, in accordance with British Columbia's pay transparency requirements.
