Job Description:
 
Our client, a reputable global organization with an incorporated law firm is looking to add a Tax Partner (Planning or Disputes) to their collegial legal team.
The group offers top tax law services to a range of internal clients across every sector and from Canadian and foreign entities; to private organizations and mid-market owner/manager businesses.
With a team of reputable planners and litigators, the firm harnesses decades of private practice experience with substantial tax law capabilities (and a global network) to serve their clients in any tax matters that arise.
 
Responsibilities include providing legal advice and support on various matters such as:
 
Disputes:
  • The tax dispute resolution process, representing clients in trials against federal and provincial tax authorities at all levels of court including: the Provincial and Federal tax courts, up to the Supreme Court of Canada.
  • Responding to federal and provincial audits.
  • Representing clients before the CRA.
  • Legal opinions with respect to tax consequences arising from transactions and post transaction audits for tax efficacy and litigation risk.
  • Advising on income tax, transfer pricing, collection measures, registered investments, expense deductibility, charitable donations, limitations periods, insurer and policy holder taxation,
Planning:
  • Tax-efficient M&A
  • Corporate Reorganizations/Spin-Offs
  • International Tax Structures
  • Corporate Finance
  • The Creation of Tax Efficient Supply Chains
  • Transfer Pricing
  • Indirect Tax Management
 
Requirements:
The successful candidate will:
  • Have bachelor of Law (LLB) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) and a Masters of Law in Taxation is preferred.
  • Be a member of good standing with the Law Society or can become an active member at the time of hire.    
  • 7 + years of tax disputes and/or corporate tax experience gained at a leading law firm.
  • A book of business is not required but is welcome
  • Be comfortable in a growth environment focusing on strategic and operational activities.
  • Have the ability to develop strong client relationships, gain credibility, and be viewed as a trusted advisor.
