This is an exceptional opportunity to work in a newly created role, for the Canadian operations of this leading company and report to the SVP and Assistant General Counsel and be responsible for providing strategic legal support and guidance in a broad range of national corporate, supply chain and commercial matters as well as manage the Canadian legal team. This lawyer will provide general corporate and commercial legal support and advice in varied areas, including procurement, corporate governance, sales and marketing, sustainability, manufacturing, human resources, compliance and regulatory.
  
  
Responsibilities:
  
  • Support diverse aspects of the Canadian business operations;
  • Provide legal advice to senior leadership re: major strategic business decisions;
  • Advise internal clients on commercial matters (sales and marketing), including advertising and promotions and partnership agreements as well as related matters;
  • Draft and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements;
  • Provide legal support re: procurement and manufacturing;
  • Support local compliance matters including privacy and French language;
  • Advise re: regulatory requirements, including product development and labeling, environmental and sustainability matters and competition law;
  • Collaborate and develop cross-functional relationships with internal clients as well as strong commercial partnerships;
  • Support the legal department’s efficiency initiatives through different internal projects and track and report on such progress;
  • Communicate directly with the SVP Legal to inform and advise on pertinent Canadian matters and coordinate re: broader US and/or global interests; and
  • Supervise and support the development of the Canadian Legal team.
Qualifications:
  
The ideal candidate will have/be:
  • A law degree from a recognized University;
  • Approximately 10-15 years of pertinent legal experience in general corporate and commercial matters, acquired within a corporation or a law firm;
  • Experience in Canadian laws and business practices;
  • Experience in the food & beverage or pharmaceutical industry and marketing and advertising a strong asset;
  • Experience in drafting and negotiating sophisticated agreements;
  • An ability to lead, mentor and foster a collaborative work environment;
  • Strong decision-making, analytical and strategic abilities to align legal strategies with overall business objectives;
  • Excellent planning and organization skills, including the ability to multi-task and problem solve rapidly;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication abilities;
  • Ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment and prioritize in accordance with the requisite business needs;
  • The ability to assess legal risks and develop strategies to mitigate them;
  • At ease in a dynamic work environment, executing with precision and respecting tight deadlines;
  • Possess strong business acumen and the ability to align legal advice with broader business objectives and financial considerations;
  • A problem solver and have the ability to find innovative solutions to complex matters;
  • Customer service oriented and treat internal clients as valued partners and provide responsive legal support;
  • Capable of building and maintaining relationships with external legal partners, regulators, and industry peers;
  • Abreast of legal developments and industry trends; 
  • A commitment to a high ethical standard and legal compliance; and
  • Bilingual (English and French);
