Our client, an esteemed full-service law firm with strong BC roots is looking to add an associate with Corporate and Personal Tax Planning Experience to their Tax and Estate Planning group.
 
This is a great opportunity for a junior lawyer to become an integral part of the firm’s collegial tax group and the chance to work on sophisticated and diverse tax and estate planning matters.

Responsibilities:
 
Working alongside experienced practitioners, the successful candidate will assist on a variety of files which may include:
  • Providing expert legal advice and strategic planning to individuals, families, and trusts on a broad range of tax and estate matters.
  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex estate planning documents, including Wills, Powers of Attorney, Representation Agreements, and various types of Trusts (e.g., alter ego, joint partner, discretionary, charitable).
  • Advising on Canadian income tax matters related to individuals, trusts, and private corporations, including tax minimization strategies for estate freezing, reorganizations, and cross-border planning.
  • Assisting clients with probate and estate administration, including advising on executor duties, beneficiary rights, and resolving contentious issues.
  • Offering counsel on charitable giving strategies and the establishment of private foundations.
  • Conducting thorough legal research and analysis to provide accurate and up-to-date advice.
  • Staying abreast of changes in tax, trust, and estate law and advise clients accordingly.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) degree from a recognized university.
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia.
  • 1 - 5 years of demonstrable experience specializing in Canadian tax and estate planning.
  • Strong knowledge of the Income Tax Act, the Wills, Estates and Succession Act (WESA), and other relevant provincial and federal legislation.
  • Experience with tax disputes and estate planning are not necessary but an asset.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Exceptional drafting abilities, with an emphasis on precision and clarity in legal documents.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly to clients.
