Director, Legal Affairs

Overview

This is an outstanding opportunity to work as the Director, Legal Affairs at a public company in a collaborative milieu and report to the Vice President, Legal. This Director will provide strategic guidance, advise senior stakeholders and oversee a team of procurement professionals. This lawyer will provide legal support for a variety of commercial matters and address contractual needs across the business to effectively attain objectives.

Responsibilities:

• Oversee strategic procurement responsibilities, including the procurement team;
• Review, draft, negotiate and advise re: a variety of agreements;
• Serve as the legal lead on sophisticated and integral initiatives;
• Support m&a transactions and related matters;
• Provide legal advice on commercial aspects of initiatives from inception to implementation; 
• Oversee legal projects and oversee external counsel where applicable;
• Lead the development and execution of procedures and policies re: business needs and improve processes;
• Build and maintain relationships with senior leadership, supporting strategic planning re: key initiatives;
• Lead and oversee strategic vendor relationships and utilize best practices;
• Manage risk and compliance matters; and
• Provide senior leadership with regular reporting on important initiatives and ensure operational efficiency.


  
Experience:
  
The ideal candidate will have/be:
  
  • Called to the Bar of Ontario;
  • A minimum of 10 years of strong, pertinent commercial legal experience acquired in an established law firm or In House department;
  • Experienced lawyer with excellent leadership, interpersonal, communication, organizational, and analytical abilities;
  • Strong experience leading and developing a team of professionals; 
  • Experience working with a procurement team;
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to interact with senior executives;
  • Experience drafting, negotiating, and advising re: a variety of sophisticated commercial contracts and transaction (technology and IP experience an asset);
  • Strategic thinker with a strong focus on client needs;
  • Responsible, able to deliver on commitments and innovative;
  • Able to prioritize and handle competing deadlines in a results-driven environment;
  • An MBA degree or professional procurement certificate is considered an asset; and
  • Experience in the financial services industry is considered an asset.
